I started my personal chiropractic care as a wellness patient. It's wild how much room for improvement you have in your own health when you start taking care of yourself regularly. Chiropractic care is beneficial for the nervous system at any and all stages of life. We are beings that adapt and react to our environments and the way we instinctively know how to do this is because we have sophisticated nervous systems! Q: How does our body know how to create an infant? A: Our nervous system. Q: How does our body know to use our food as building blocks for organs, muscles, tissue etc? A: Our nervous system. Chiropractors evaluate and care for the nervous system! I'm a pregnancy, postpartum and pediatric chiropractor, a birth doula, a BirthFit Leader and a co-founder of a 501c3 nonprofit: Sequoia Birth Collective. My mission has been to cultivate a community and space for women who are growing humans, birthing humans and healing from birth in a holistic and emotionally supported way.
My son has been my 'Why', but to explain a little more I'll share a bit of my journey. My journey began with learning Ayurveda, body awareness and mindfulness in a yoga college course followed by years of work experience in corporate pharmacy’s and a diagnostic lab which made me realize I preferred a holistic approach to health and led to my education and focus on holistic healing through chiropractic care. I always knew I wanted to be in the health field but finding the spot I needed to be in came through my own pregnancy experience.
Before specializing in pregnancy and pediatrics I became a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, contracted with USA Beach Volleyball in 2014 and traveled to places like China, Cypress, Portugal, Dominican Republic, Switzerland and Poland supporting professional and Olympic athletes. This led to an opportunity to be a Medical Coordinator for Kerri Walsh Jennings’ P1440 Beach Volleyball event series in San Jose, CA and Huntington Beach. These were all incredibly fulfilling experiences since the high school version of me had always wanted to become an Athletic Trainer: responding to on-field medical situations and treating sports injuries. I had a strong focus on functional movement and physical recovery care in my practice as well working with runners and athletes of all skill levels.
Being an active individual I have always tried to “practice what I preached” to the athletes I cared for and took this same mentality into “training for birth” when I became pregnant. I incorporated principles taught in BirthFit which fit perfectly into my current lifestyle and background in functional movement. BirthFit, Spinning Babies, and functional nutrition felt naturally supportive to the mother and baby during this momentous transition that I dug deeper into birth work and support. I chose to become a doula because I recognized the impact being present for a birthing woman could have for her emotional and physical health. I bring the same integrity as I would supporting athletes in a sporting event because birth is one of THE most athletic events a woman could experience.
I also made it a goal to build a community of providers to support those experiencing the parenthood transition. The Sequoia Birth Collective, a 501c3 nonprofit was developed especially for this reason. Feel free to check it out at www.sequoiabirthcollective.org
